Anyone else have this Cox-2 side effect? Anyone else have this Cox-2 side effect? -- Posted by Katherine Wolfe on 06-22-04 17:08
Hi Guys -
I was prescribed Vioxx, and then Bextra, for a flare-up in my neck/shoulder
last month. With both drugs, the inside of my mouth got really raw, which
resolved a couple of days after discontinuation. Has anyone else had this?
If so, have you found another Cox-2 inhibitor that doesn't do it to you?
The pain relief from both the Vioxx and the Bextra was really wonderful, and
I'm hoping I can find one that will still do the trick, without this wierd
and very uncomfortable side-effect.

Hi Katherine, No, I do not have that kind of reaction to NSAIDs and I
have not read that reaction to them except for when a person is having a
acid reflux type thing going on. The raw throat and/or mouth can be a sign
of this. Always take it with food and not right before you lay down for
sleep. It is something to talk to your doctor about.

Yeah, I talked to the doctor, he just kind of shrugged and said, we'll try
something else if you want. I've had reflux in the past, this isn't that,
it actually feels more like a strange reaction I had once when I had the
flu. It was just kind of odd, and I wondered, since Vioxx and Bextra are
used so often for arthritis, whether anyone here had run into it, too.

hi kw
unfortunately, the cox-2's do have a long list of 'poss.' side effects -
including:
dry mouth, gum/tooth irritation, reflux, esophagitis, esophageal perforation,
and gastric ulceration.
there are others, but these are the ones that might be the cause of your
problems.
these occur in 2 - 6.3 % of all patients.
be well

The reaction that I have is swelling in my legs; rather extreme, actually.
My doctor said I am allergic to anti-inflamatories, so am stuck with OTC
which do not help my pain. I love the way I feel on Vioxx or Bextra, no
pain, but I look awful - all swollen.
