Vioxx vs. others

Vioxx vs. others -- Posted by Brooke on 09-19-04 22:00

I'm still young and in college but I have horrible shoulders so my
doctor placed me on Vioxx to help reduce popping and grinding in my
joints. However, it has been awful on my stomach. Is there anything
out there milder I should ask about?

Vioxx is a cox2 nsaid and as such is designed not to be nasty on your
or anyone elses stomach! Cox 1 & 2 nsaids have the award for that.
There are other cox 2 nsaids available, try asking for mobic.

Hi Brooke,
I too have bad shoulders. You said you were in college....if you
carry a backpack that will make your shoulder feel worse. I use
icepacks on my shoulders in the evenings and I take Bextra and
Ultracet. I tried Vioxx, but it upset my stomach and I gained 10+
pounds in 2 weeks. Try taking glucosamine/chondritin to help those
joints, especially for the future.

I am 37 now, and we are discussing joint replacements....I wish I had
been kinder to my joints when I was younger.

I've had stomach problems on Vioxx, too - it was like I had the world's
worst case of heartburn. I know all the Cox-2 anti-inflammatories are
supposed to be easier on the stomach, but in Vioxx's case I was asking
"easier than *what*!?"

My stomach was a lot happier when I took Celebrex or Bextra, both Cox-2
anti-inflammatories, or Mobic, which I believe works on both Cox-1 and
Cox-2. Whichever anti-inflammatory you take, it's always a good idea to
take them with food, because it helps protect the stomach lining.
