USA and other countries should ban importation of Ayurvedic medications that pose health risk

USA and other countries should ban importation of Ayurvedic medications that pose health risk -- Posted by bdixit on 10-04-04 08:01

There have been confirmed reports
() of certain
Ayurvedic preparations imported from India that have caused serious
health problems. These medications are being manufactured in India and
imported in USA. They are being consumed without proper medical advice
or quality control. Such importation should be banned by the respective
governments. There is now increased interest in importing other types
of Ayurvedic medications under the guise of, " Alternative Therapies."
This is being done for making big profits since "Alternative Therapies"
are becoming more and more popular. This is a dangerous practice. Most
of the Ayurvedic medicines are prepared by the methods that were
established hundreds of years ago. The same methods are even used today.
These methods have poor quality control, and those who manufacture these
medications are not using tests that can easily detect presence of heavy
metals and other toxic substances. Now some of these Ayurvedic
medications are being sold "online" (e.g. and
). It would be appropriate for the Western
countries to ban the importation of these types of medications, most of
which have been tested clinically in statistically validated human
patient trials for their effectiveness. There are other significant
problems that are posed by use of Ayurvedic medications that are often
sold "over-the-counter" form and these can interact with other
prescribed medications. For information see
().
Claim that "Ayurvedic Samskaras" convert extremely toxic substances into
useful medicines is also unsubstantiated.

There shouldn't be any problem for India since it is now governed by
loonies. As far as USA is concerned, this is not the right forum to
make such a request. May be you should join Bush or Kerry's compaign
and push your Indian loony views against Hindus. Pakis will be more
than happy to fund your venture. Good luck!!!

I just realized that you are one of those loonies. Think of it, that
may be a very mild term to describe you. .....Balwant Dixit

NSA, Mr Dixit and the loony govt should be working on to handle
troubled NE region rather than witch hunting for harmless NDA and
Hindu leaders. Mr. B. Dixit, don't spend your energy on bashing
Hindus, look at how venerable India has become since loony govt came
into power!!! If you really love India, fight her real enemies.

The Tribune editorial
India as dustbin
Alas, anything can be dumped here

Once again, India's import regulatory mechanism stands exposed.
Whether it is the disease-infected blood or live missiles and bombs,
anything can be brought into this country. The meaning of
liberalisation, it seems, has been stretched rather too far. One need
not this time accuse the security forces of laxity in plugging the
unauthorised channels in a porous international border. Frequent
reports of human trafficking and drug smuggling have ceased to
surprise. Tainted blood, bombs, mortar and missiles are the latest
additions to the import agenda. And these were not secretly slipped
into the country. The cargoes came through recognised, legal channels.

As Ghaziabad exploded, experts immediately got busy expressing their
outrage on TV channels at security lapses. Caught unawares, the
government, however, failed to piece together a convincing explanation
to a dismayed nation. The country also has a National Security
Adviser, who, instead of coming out with a fact-based reasonable
reaction, opted to take on the TV experts for sensationalising the
issue. Like its control set-up, the government's response system too
has been a letdown. The truth is no one seems to know for how long
such imports as the deadly consignment from Iran have been coming into
the country.

What is not in doubt is that India has emerged as a convenient dumping
ground for all types of waste, specially emanating from the developed
world. There is hardly any agency to check the toxicity of the
imported material. Small wonder, drugs and chemicals, banned in the
West, are in circulation here. The entry into the country of the
obnoxious congress grass should have alerted the government long ago
to be vigilant to such dangers in future and put in place a reliable
mechanism to ensure a strict check on undesirable imports.
Liberalisation does not mean free for all for companies. The Ghaziabad
episode should impel the government to fortify its regulatory
mechanism.

The more you write, obvious it becomes that you have no clue what
you are writing about. May be you should show what you write to someone
in an elementary school before you post it. You should get an award for
irrelevancy of your thoughts and comments. But please do not take any
"Ayurvedic brain tonics", or "Churnas" or "Bhasmas" since some of them
might spoil your thinking further. Good luck in your efforts to protect
Hindus and India. You should justify your name name "Virendra" by your
actions.......BND
