Back Surgery

Back Surgery -- Posted by Mark on 10-28-04 17:16

I had a lumbar laminectomy (L4) about 4 years ago which relieved the severe
leg pain caused by degenerative disks and vertebrae squeezing the sciatic
nerve. Now the leg pain is back and my previous surgeon talks about a fusion
process where I'd be laid up for about 6 mths (3 in a brace). I'm a really
active 59 year old recent retiree and don't like this idea. I recently heard
about a new surgical procedure that has been used in Europe for many years
and for the last few years has proved to be very successful here in the
States. It involves using some sort of metal rods in the vertebrae instead
of a graft. The recovery time apparently is much quicker. Has anyone heard
of this?
