Osteo "Bubbling" on end knuckles Osteo "Bubbling" on end knuckles -- Posted by chatw@my-deja.com on 01-07-05 11:12
I've been diagnosed with osteo on the small, end knuckles of my
fingers. It probably came from previously injuries.
What is disturbing is that it sometimes starts with a large, "bubble"
off center on the knuckle. The one currently on my left index looks
like a large, gross boil.
Does anyone know how to shrink, or minimize this? I've tried some
topical CM and also DMSO on them, but they won't go away. (My joints
aren't particulary painful and I'm taking glucosamine, MSM, tumeric,
etc.)

This sounds like a ganglion cyst. Not a cyst, and having nothing to do with
ganglia (who the heck knows why they call it a ganglion cyst, anyway),
they're really a rupture in the joint capsule of the knuckle, that lets a
little fluid escape and form the bump you see.
The preferred treatment is aspiration, or surgery, but the old-fashioned
treatment used to be smacking them good and hard with a heavy book, which
would rupture the 'cyst'. I have one, and haven't had surgery for it -
don't have the nerve to whack my finger, either.
You can read an article about ganglion cysts, at:

You're exactly right! It sounds like it can be nothing else. Thank you!
What they don't mention is the aesthetics of these fugly things - mine
looks almost like an eyeball growing from my finger! Now, if I only
knew how to prevent it, since it is returning for the second time on
another finger!
