Salazopiryne and AS

Salazopiryne and AS -- Posted by OrenFlekser on 01-11-05 15:35

Hello
I'm 24, suffering from AS since 17.
My condition is very good, no problems at all in the periphery, X-rays
showing sclerosis in the right sacroiliac, but that's all.
Until now I was only on NSAIDS, but my new doctor has advised me to
start Salazopiryne(SLZ) treatment.
I was sceptic about it, cause the NSAIDS was working fine for me, and
my disease was progressing very slowly, but she said that DMARDS can
stop the progressing of the disease.
As a second opinion I went to a prof. that is considered one of the
best in Israel - Prof. Robinov. He, on the other hand, advised me not
to take SLZ and just go on with the NSAIDs. He said that specifically
for AS, the DMARDS are known to be helpfull only for problems in the
periphery (elbows etc.), but it cannot stop the progress of the
disease in the back. He said that if anything, maybe the biological
treatment (TNF-) can be helpful, but of course it's not advisable for
me at the moment considering my good condition.
He also said that the first 4 years of the disease serve as a good
precursor to the progressing of the disease in the future - if in the
first 4 years it progresses slowly, there is a good chance that it
would stop at the sacroiliac joints, not moving further up the back.
Any responses about what this prof. had said ?
Thanks - Oren
