sciatica question (?) sciatica question (?) -- Posted by meeso on 04-17-04 01:29
Hello to everyone;
1) I'm wondering whether sciatica could ever be caused by psychological
stress, anxiety, depression, etc...
2) If it's only because of a continuous pressure over the nerve, what
would you advice someone who's work requires that she sit on her buttocks
for a loooong long time continuously? No maximizing mobility or
Independence!
3) apart from the pain, how much dangerous it could go?
Do you know if there were another more proper place to ask in?
Thank you,

1) Anxiety and stress trigger sympathetic nervous responses that result in
all kinds of physiological changes, one of them being increased muscle tone
and tightening. This can exacerbate any underlying, existing myofascial
condition.
2) Be soft seated ( cushioned comfort) in a chair that promotes good posture
( lumbar support).
3) Acute to chronic leg/buttock pain can be problem enough and can result in
affected gait and amongst many other things, a general decrease in quality
of life leading to secondary and tertiary problems
Although newsgroups are fine for general interest, go see your doctor,
chiropractor, PT or MT for
proper assessment and treatment.

I usually suggest the exercise for Piriformis Syndrome, so that if that is
what is causing the problem, it can be relieved. If details are desired, say
so.

The person stands and rotates their hips, without rotating their upper
torso. If they get the same kind of pain they usually get, it may well be
piriformis syndrome.
The figure four exercise is described in the 'piriformis stretch' portion of
http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cd/piriformis/pir04.html
A modified figure four is illustrated in figure 4 at
http://www.ccptr.org/PF/chronic_leg_pain.htm

It's called a figure 4 because that's what it looks like when you have the
ankle of one leg over the knee of the other.
