Sternoclavicular joint swelling

Sternoclavicular joint swelling -- Posted by farhan3000@gmail.com on 06-08-05 14:00

Did anyone have their arthritis diagnosed because of a sternoclavicular
joint swelling or do you know anything about the problems related to
this joint?

Thanks

Hi,,,, yes, I know a great deal about joints swellings but then I have RA.
I do not know what kind of arthritis your have or what you take for it. I
do not know what kind of doctor you use that loves big words that end up
being a lack of information. Good luck with it though.

All I know is that I have a painless swelling and high rheumatoid
factor. Does that mean anything. And I'm a male in early 20s.

Only a Rheumatologist can tell you for sure and even then sometimes it takes

years to get a good answer.
sorry,,,,

hey f

i wasn't diagnosed because of it, but as a still's disease RA, i do have
associated inflammation of clavicle, sternum, and ribs

for those that don't know where we're talking about sternoclavicular joint
is that meeting point of the clavicle - the [collar]bone that goes from the
front of the shoulder area over on a downward diagonal to the
sternum/breastbone. this bones primary purpose it to provide additional
shoulder support

the joint that 'f' is referring to is that which joins the sternum, see:

http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/reference/gray/illustrations/figure?id=325

this one shows the entire bone structure: http://tinyurl.com/an7df

note that there is a disc between them, cartilage, and the whole thing is
covered by a large ligament.

if you rule out traumatic injury - this would be not be uncommon given your
age http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/sternoclavicular_joint_injury],

then immune response inflammation will/can cause significant discomfort,
and if unchecked erosion damage, including disruption of the synovial
membranes

For the benifit of others I'll post what my doc said. So my swelling's
been there for 6 months, and blood test showed reallyhigh rhemuatoid
factor (220 or so), but it's gone down, but still VERY high. So I went
to a rheumatologist, an award-winning professor at a med school. He
asked me if I had pain (I don't), looked at all my x-rays that showed
no hard or soft-tissue damage. He said all he sees is swelling and
wants me to come back in 6 months for another blood test and x-ray. So
he's just gonna monitor me.

Also, he told me I have lax joints (overflexible) and such ppl are
prone to injuries and arthritis. But he didn't make a dx of arthritis.
