low oxylate v low carb WOE low oxylate v low carb WOE -- Posted by Raleighgirl on 09-07-05 01:44
Good morning all.
OUCH. KIDNEY STONES! Guess what I found out? Many of the
wonderful low-carb foods I've been eating in order to
(successfully) control Type II diabetes have caused me to develop
kidney stones. O man! I was diagnosed 5/05 and have just
recently started feeling like I'm "getting it." A1c was down
from 10 to 6 last visit.
I need your help please, I can't be the only one with this
problem. I've been searching the 'net and can't come up with
much so far. Here's a partial list of foods high in oxylates
that I have been depending on/eating regularly: peanut butter,
tofu, celery, collards, eggplant, escarole, leeks, parsley, green
pepper, berries, summer squash, pecans, green leafy veggies,
lettuce.
What in the world am I going to eat now?
Sorry to cross-post but I need to reach everyone I can.
Any pointers, help, advice will be greatly appreciated!

Kidney stones can appear after weight loss in general,
regardless of what you eat.

Kidney stones can occur regardless of whether or not you are dieting. ;-)
It's food related, and most of all HYDRATION related!
DRINK WATER!!!
Lots of it.
Daily.

No, in fact you didn't really find that out, what you were given was
just one of several theories. Another common theory is that they are
caused by high protein associated with a lack of exercise or by
insufficient hydration. There are many theories, no finite proof. All of
the above reasons were given to me by kidney specialists at various
times. The only thing I feel fairly certain is accurate is that being
constantly dehydrated increases risk.
Some people get them, some with an identical lifestyle and diet don't.
It is possible that your weight loss and low carb WOE has contributed to
the formation of kidney stones, but it is just as possible that you
would have developed them if you had made no changes in lifestyle; no
one can be sure. There is no indication that it is a common occurrence
with low carb eating or diet groups like this one would have constant
discussion about the subject as would many gyms.
The real issue is that avoiding those foods cannot guarantee that you
will not develop kidney stones again in the future, but continuing your
WOE will help guarantee your continuing health.
Kidney stones aren't a big deal nowadays, I have had them twice before,
about fifteen years apart, and a recent CT scan shows new stones forming
now. The previous two were when eating high carb and related (or so said
the medical opinion at the time) to insufficient hydration, something
that I am now very careful to avoid. I will continue as I am, and when
they start to give problems (become painful) I will once again have
ultrasound treatment to break them up and put up with a few days
discomfort while they pass rather than change a diet that has worked
very well in diabetic control.
Cutting back on calcium sources in an attempt to avoid kidney stones may
increase the risk of osteoporosis, particularly in women. I would think
very carefully about it if I was you.
Regards
David

Thanks David, Tom, Cubit and Om for your thoughts.
Yes I freaked when the doc said that. Here I am being so very
careful to eat low carb and all of my "reliables" are on this
list he gave me of high oxalate foods! David, it is a good idea
to keep on with the WOE and see if another one develops cuz I am
most definitely healthier than ever before! I'm fairly sure
hydration isn't the problem. I normally drink at least 1/2
gallon of water a day- the hubby says I'm addicted to it! Now
the relation to exercise may be suspect in that I have NO
addiciton there hahaha. I know, I know I need to change that
way of thinking.
Anyway, thanks to all for your perspectives.

Bullshit.
I was passing kidney stones every few years before low carbing. With low
carb it appears my stones have stopped, but it is more likely that the
process of making stones has nothing to do with it.
