Re: Atkins diet? Re: Atkins diet? -- Posted by Bob@.MISSING-HOST-NAME. on 09-11-03 16:21
I read Atkins, was warned that the diet was dangerous, but had
northing to lose and was tired of trying to get the numbers halfway
decent.WIth Atkins, I lost 30 lbs., blood sugars declined rapidly, and
the diet was performing just as predicted. It was expensive though,
when we went shopping. I have abandoned the Atkins diet because there
is NOT enough long-term clinical data to support what the late Dr.
Atkins lays claim to. I am however, watching and keeping my carb
intake below 100 and writing down everything I take into my body. I
keep track of fats, carbs and calories. If you take in more carbs than
your body can burn, guess what; in addition to having higher blood
sugars as a result, the excess you don't burn of gets stored as fat!
You, and only you should research and tend to your health needs. Weigh
all claims upon well-documented evidence and good clinical trials. I
need more proof before I can be convinced that Atkins (or any other
low-carb)diet is in healthy in the long run. Take care.

Howdy folks. This is my first post to the groups, so as way of
introduction I have been a type 1 diabetic for 11 yrs and am 40 now. My
A1Cs are usually around 7.3 so I have pretty good control, but like most
of us I do have highs and lows. I monitor my BG 3 or more times a day.
I've read the book called Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and have
followed it several times for 6 months or so to get my weight under
control. It is similar to Atkins, but is written by a diabetic Dr with
his own diabetes practice. I can not speak to the long term health
consequences of a low carb diet, but I can attest to the fact that it
definitely decreases the severity of the high-low swings in BG.
I saw in a magazine recently (can't remember the name that there was a
study on Atkins that found no health consequences. However, it was not
a long term study and the researchers are now taking it over the next
five years.
My 2 cents,
Roger

My father in law has been diagnosed as being "pre-diabetic" and was put on a
diabetic diet, checking his blood sugar often. He decided if a low carb
diabetic diet is good, then the Atkins Diet (ie. very low carbs) would be
even better. The doctors at the VA in Atlanta said they don't like it at
all. They said the Atkins diet is not a good diet for diabetics to be on.
