Laws for Diabetic Supplies Laws for Diabetic Supplies -- Posted by drstitch34 on 10-17-03 19:43
Would anyone in these groups have information on the law (not certain
if it is only California or federal) concerning providing of diabetic
supplies, drugs,insulin etc.
It was passed five or so years ago and stated that those with
diagnosed diabetes could receive all needed equipment, drugs etc at no
cost.
Would anyone have any information?
Thanks

It's certainly not a federal law and it's not that way in CA. I was
diagnosed when I lived in CA and my supplies were covered by my insurance.

not at no cost!
california requires all insurance co's in california to cover the cost
of supplies including pumps if a board cert endo says it's needed.
at your co-pay or deductable.
Ohio just pasted the same law, not sure if it covers pumps though.

DR,
These laws are typically to mandate coverage for supplies by insurance
companies, not free supplies.
Generally these laws apply to insurance products. Under federal ERISA laws,
most "self funded" plans are exempt, and amount to almost half of employer
sponsored health plans.
So if you work for a huge employer, they typically have a "self funded plan"
where they hire Aetna or Cigna or the like to pay all the health claims as a
"third party administrator". But the money comes out of your employer's
checking account rather than the insurance company. By doing it this way
they are exempt from all the mandates.
It has been my experience however, that *most* company plans will follow
mandate guidelines on diabetes coverage, even if they aren't legally
required to do so.

It has been my experience that in the state of Kansas that diabetic supplies
are covered under durable medical coverage, and insulin under prescription
drug coverage. This was mandated by the Kansas Legislature.

Accu-Chek test strips -- Help -- Posted by M. Pann on 11-22-03 10:00
My insurance company, under the belief that they know best, have
informed me that they will no longer pay for One Touch Ultra strips but
will pay for any of the Accu-Chek strips.
I must convert.
Looking at the Accu-Chek offerings I saw their Active machine. It claims
to measure in 5 to 10 seconds and use only 1 microliter blood. However,
they say that they use "chromo" technique, which is different from the
OneTouch Ultra.
Is anyone here either using now or have used in the past the Active
Accu-Chek strips? Are (were) you happy with it? Was it reliable? Any
other gotcha's I should know?
