Take Medication before FBGT?

Take Medication before FBGT? -- Posted by Larry on 11-17-03 16:13

Hi Everyone
I was diagnosed about 1 year ago with type 2!
I am basically under control using Glucotrol XL. My Question? I fast for
about 12 to 14 hours BEFORE my Blood is sampled for A1C and Fasting Bg! I
normally take my Glucotrol Just before breakfast. Should I delay my dose a
couple of hours till after blood is sampled. I have been waiting to just a
1/2 hour before test figuring it would not kick in that fast being it is a
24 hr time release. I usually do my own test also just before the sample and
I am close! I basically think I should wait till after the test and take it
and then eat! My Dr says it should be taken as normal, but you know how
opinions are! Any thoughts Thanks Larry

Larry, my doctor told me to take my Glucotrol 30 minutes before a meal (I
take it before breakfast); he said it works more efficiently that way. If
you take it too long before you eat, you run the risk of a hypo. Sometimes
there can be quite a wait before an appointment if the doc has had an
emergency, so your "1/2 hour before test" might easily stretch into a much
longer time. Even if you go to an independent lab for these tests, you
never know when you might run into a delay.

This is how I work it: On days when I'm scheduled for an FBG, I wait until
I get back home to take the Glucotrol so I don't have a hypo while I'm on
the road. This way I know for sure it'll only be a half-hour before I eat.

Karen
Type 2
Dx 9/11/02
Glucotrol 10 mg.
Glucophage 1000 mg.
