neuropathy--how do you know

neuropathy--how do you know -- Posted by Peter Neenan on 11-30-03 17:32

How does one know when diabetic neuropathy is setting in? Although my feet
feel somewhat heavier than they used to, I don't seem to have lost any
feeling in them. When it does occur, is it like having a foot that is
completely numb?

Thanks

PN

For me, it's not a true numbness sensation. It's more of a pins and needles
feeling in my toes - like someone poking your toes with a needle.

Personally when I went thru it I didn't notice anything for along time. It
was only when I burnt my foot on a heater last year trying to get warm that
I realized after a week in hospital and plastic surgery that "WOW, I really
don't feel my feet" HIndsight is 20/20 however looking back I see now that
there were signs that it was coming on but i didn't notice them when it
actually was happeneing. I see now that the feeling was diminshed but thru
either not wanting to allow the truth to be told or pure stupidity I allowed
myself to ignore it. It's not truely a heaviness of the feet it's more like
you get a gash and don't realize how the heck it got there cuz you don't
remember hitting anything that would cause a cut like that...

I first noticed the neuropothy in my feet when my toes started
going numb and tingling a lot. After time it started moving up
my feet and now sometimes a good part of my whole foot (feet) is
numb sometimes. I went to a Neurologist and had it
checked out and yes it was neuropothy.
