Hello,

My name is Tracy Finney. I live in Marietta, GA. (USA) and have been
Type I diabetic since 1995.

I have tried about every one of the diabetes software for PalmOS that I
could find over the last several years, and have not found one I consider
"The Best". Some are great in several areas, but lack in others. Some are
decent, but the food database is way off on the carb. values.

I have decided to create a piece of software that I like and I can call
"The Best". This new software package will be called "Total Diabetes
Management System Software", so I am creating it to be exactly what the name
implies, a Total System. It will be a Shareware application that will be
priced very low, compared to the other software packages. There will be a
download site and it will be posted on several software distribution sites.

I would like your input on what would make "The Best" diabetic PDA
software package. What would it do? What would it track? What reports
would you want? What areas would the food database cover, would you want
regional restaurants or the whole country?

I want serious input. This message is only being posted on the

I hope you succeed in doing so but I have no desire to help
you make money. As a diabetic, I'd have thought that you
already would know what is required. Presentation, ease of
use and simplicity would seem to be obvious requirements.

Thank you all for your responses so far.

I began creating this for myself, but then I have been asked to make it
available to others by my diabetic associates because of what I want it to
do.

I am a Type I and know a great deal about it and what is needed for it. But
I do not use a Pump; am not Type II and do not have Gestational Diabetes and
do not know some needs of those people. I am not looking for the obvious
things it should do, I am looking for the "I wish mine did this" stuff. The
things that are obvious to a Pump user, but not a Non-Pump user.

I have gotten several ideas for reports from my Dr's, but wanted everyday
diabetics ideas and needs.

I am not advertising or selling this software here and it will not be made
available here at any time. I am only asking for the areas of intrest that
other diabetics have and need in a PDA Software Application.

I thank all that have replied to me and look forward to serving.

All right, I'll give it a try.

PDA software: needs inputs for

glucose level
food (including not just carbs, but protein, fat, fiber, calories)
exercise (light, moderate, heavy, and type)
medications--with options for both MDI and pump users
notes (illness, travel, stress, etc.)

For pump users: a record of basal rates, and the ability to modify
bolus to carb rations by time of day/ meal

I prefer to enter all data for an event--say a meal--on a single
screen, rather than inputing glucose level, carbs, and meds
separately

The food database should offer the options of editing, and include
more extensive restaurant offerings (both fast food and other) than
most current databases

Although a PDA graphic depiction (of carbs, of insulin, etc.) is nice,
it is not necessary.

Above all, I need to be able to download my data to my desktop/laptop,
and have some flexibility in determining how to view the data. A
simple pie chart (showing readings on target, high, or low) is not
enough. I need to be able to see the ratio of carbs to insulin to
glucose on an hourly basis, so that I can view a large quantity of
data at any given time to help make decisions about modifying
diet/regime.

An example (on a 24-hour clock)--though this chart should cover all
24 hours, not just 12 hours):

I would like to have the option, in setting up this report on my
computer, of including the five major entries (glucose, carbs,
insulin, exercise, notes), so that I can see, over a period of days or
weeks, the complex way in which these interact with one another.

For example, in the chart above, I might have noted on April 30 that
my standard 1 unit to 6 grams of carbs in the morning was not enough,
so the next day, I took 1 unit to 7 grams, for a better result.

My observations about current software:

I use Diabetes Pilot, in part because it has a desktop component that
allows a 24-hour spreadsheet of glucose readings (but not carbs,
exercise, etc.). Problems with Diabetes Pilot: I don't like having
to enter food, exercise, insulin, and glucose separately, when other
programs (for example, Logbook DM) does so. The Diabetes Pilot
integrated food database (a necessity for pumpers) is OK, but I would
like something more complete--like that which can be downloaded from
CalorieKing. Plus only 1 ratio is allowed for insulin to carb ration.

CalorieKing Diabetes Log is not integrated with its food database--or
if it can be integrated, the process is not self-evident. Data must
be entered one item at a time, not multiple data points through a
single screen. Again, multiple insulin to carb ratios are not
allowed, and there is no integrated desktop package.

UTS Diabetes (Universal Tracking System) has an integrated
(unsatisfactory) desktop package, and can track all kinds of data.
One can give multiple insulin to bg levels (if bg is over 200, a
different ratio is used than when bg is less than 200). But different
ratios for different time periods is not possible. There is no
integrated food database, and only nutritional information about carbs
is included. (Because of the lack of a database, I did not test this
package extensively.)

Diabetes Log, again, has no integrated food database, but does allow
you to create entries (with data about carbs only). When making an
entry, one can input bg, carbs, exercise, and insulin all at the same
time, but there is no calculator for insulin level. Plus, again, no
integrated desktop package for analyzing data.

Gluco-Log allows entry of multiple data on a single screen, and is
quite flexible. No integrated food database, no desktop package. An
interesting "bell and whistle"--an emergency icon, that if tapped,
will shut off the PDA. I'm not sure why.

Logbook DM--outstanding package, but it lacks a built-in food
database, though one can install either the CalorieKing or USDA
databases and use it with the program. Unfortunately, when the
CalorieKing database is pulled up, you exit Logbook DM, and you cannot
simply paste the data from CalorieKing into Logbook DM. Manual entry
of food allows for only protein and carbs (though bolus calculations
can take into account protein.) But big pluses: stylus-free entry of
data; all data can be entered from a single page; bolus calculations
take into account time of day as well as high readings as well as
unused boluses; you can also set alarms to remind you to retest 15
minutes after correcting a low bg, 2 (or more) hours after a
bolus/meal, etc. Missing: the desktop analytical package. I find
Logbook DM to be quite good, but there needs to be a better
integration of the food database.
