Welcome to the dubvious honor of being a member of the Diabetics club. It
is a royal b***h to get used to. I have been diagnosed for about 2 years.
At first, my numbers were all over the place. Finally, after being quite
ill with a blood sugar of 26 (Canadian Units), I got the doctor in the
emergency ward to refer me to a
doctor that he new in town that made a study of diabetes.
He did several things. First - he read me the riot act about my diet (or
lack thereof). I had been following a dietician's diet, but he wanted some
changes. Second - he looked at most of my medication, threw away several,
and prescribed a couple of others. He believes that it is very beneficial
to have a low blood pressure - especially if you are diabetic. He then
prescribed Avandia and Diamicron. He prescribed one other at first - I
can't remember the name, but he said that it would only work for about 6 mo.
It did. It brought my blood sugar under control for the first time in a
year. Since then, I use just the avandia and diamicron. I am also working
out on a treadmill, and have a steady hba1c (which is an average of the % of
blood sugar over a 3 mo. period - done by blood test) of 5.26 at last test.
So, to sum up a long story - find if there is a doctor in your area that
other doctors refer to about diabetes (your local hospital may know), and
don't give up hope. It will come - but you may have to go through several
changes in medication before you find the right ones.
Good Luck!
Fred.

fred are you T1 or T2?as you may have seen in my first post i was
diagnosed T1 at the age of 19 and until i was sent to an
endocrinologist( is a dr who studies diabetes and is an internalist) my
levels were all over creation too and none of them were ever lower than
250 most times 3-4050 and those were just fastings, 8 years ago i was
placed on insulin pump therapy because my body had built a resistance to
the long lasting(nph) insulins, since being on the pump my a-1c levels
are under 7 and getting closer to 6 before the pump they were almost 13,
(american standard reading) my BP has never been an issue at my highest
reading it was only 126/86 most of the time its at 110/70
i am on 3 different meds for high cholesterol and a med for my kidneys
that is also used for BP (although for me its just to slow down the
onset of kidney failure) and recent have been put on levothroid for
hypothyroidism
so here you have my diabetic history in a rather large nutshell i wont
go into my complications at this time
