Many Seniors Skipping their Medications
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct 08, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) --
Many seniors with chronic conditions such as heart disease and depression
tend to neglect to take their medications consistently, U.S. researchers
have found.
University of Michigan researchers surveyed more than 4,000 adults over age
50 and found 18 percent of those with chronic conditions skip some of their
prescription medicines because of out-of-pocket cost pressures, and 14
percent do so at least every month.
Based on their findings, the researchers estimate that every month,
cost-related medication skipping leads to more than 1 million Americans with
diabetes using less medication than was prescribed to them, and causes more
than 1.6 million people with asthma to miss some of their doses.
