People with Diabetes on Diet Only Are Poorly Monitored

People with type 2 diabetes managed by diet alone have significant rates of
complications and are less likely than those on medication to be monitored
adequately.

Tight glycaemic control reduces microvascular complications in patients with
diabetes. Researchers from Nottingham investigated diabetes-related
complications in 7,870 people with type 2 diabetes from 42 general
practices.

Of the group, 31.3 per cent had their diabetes managed through diet alone.
This group is much less likely to have HbA1c measurements, blood pressure,
cholesterol, smoking, microalbuminuria testing, or screening for foot
problems recorded. Of those on medication, 38.4 per cent had an HbA1C above
7.5 per cent, compared with 17.3 per cent of those on diet alone. Compared
with those treated by diet only, those on medication were less likely to
have high blood pressure (odds ratio 1.17) and were less likely to be on
antihypertensive agents (odds ratio 1.65).

Those on diet only were more likely to have raised cholesterol (odds ratio
1.45) and less likely to be prescribed a statin (odds ratio 0.47). Although
fewer of those treated by diet have diabetes-related complications (68 per
cent) compared with those on medication (80 per cent), the rate is much
higher than for the population without diabetes.

There is a new plan offered nationwide that is "simplified issue" meaning they will accept most people, including diabetics. Reason? It is an employer group plan. Employers cannot exclude employees due to health. It is good in any state and accepted by all doctors. Doctors do not have to b... (Read More)

My pharmacist tells me that I need not refrigerate Lantus insulin. The box says to keep it between 36 and 46 C. He says they do not refrigerate it. I have refrigerated mine. Don't see any sense in taking the risk but has he already messed it up. He says as long as the room is cool that it is... (Read More)
