Pharmaceutical Firms' Free-Drug Programs Help Those Who Can't Afford Pills

Sep. 6--As millions of Americans use discount cards or Canadian pharmacies
to hold down their prescription drug costs, Dale Mackey of Carrollton has
discovered an unbeatable deal.

He gets his medication free.

"It's helped me through some serious illnesses," he says. "It's literally
been a lifesaver."

Mr. Mackey, 69, ordinarily would have to pay at least $386 a month for the
four prescriptions he takes for his diabetes and other ailments -- a sum the
retired technical editor says he couldn't afford on his fixed income. But
because he's enrolled in four patient assistance programs run by
pharmaceutical companies, he receives his medication for nothing. A friend
told him about the deal.

Health care experts say the programs are one of the best-kept secrets in
medicine and a godsend for individuals of any age who don't have
prescription drug coverage and can't pay for their medication.

The only trouble is that the assistance comes with a paperwork requirement
for both patients and their physicians, which can discourage some from
participating.

Mr. Mackey has gotten a hand from the Senior Source of Dallas, where the
staff works with older adults and their doctors in filling out and sending
in applications for the prescription drugs.

Upon approval, the pharmaceutical companies deliver a three-month supply of
Mr. Mackey's medication to his physician and, in the case of one
prescription, to him directly.

"The free drugs have spared many people on fixed incomes from having to
choose between paying for their medicine and making their rent and utility
payments," says Kerry Smoot of the Senior Source.
