Am I Diabetic???

Am I Diabetic??? -- Posted by R Laury on 08-13-03 17:35

Four years ago, my doctor put me on Diovan (not taking any other meds until
then)
for blood pressure control. It worked. My blood
pressure stays in the near normal range. About 2 years
later after a fasting A1C of 6.9 he put me on 2X 1000mG
Glucophage.
Now here's the rub.
I STILL have a fasting BS level of 120-125. An A1C of 6.2.
If I don't eat lunch at straight up 12:00 noon I feel like I'm
going to pass out. I'm ok after lunch and take the 1st
1000Mg Glucophage. By 4:00 pm the bottom is falling out.
I feel disoriented, and can hardly do my work. By the time
I get home my BS is 80-100 range and I have to eat some
sort of sweets or something to get stable. I eat dinner at 6:00pm
and about 9:00 pm I take the second Glucophage. And it all starts
over again. I'm 50 years old and pretty normal weight. No one else
in our family is diabetic. I never had any other symptoms such as thirst
frequent urination, blurry vision ect. I'm thinking about quitting the
Glucophage
and just watching my diet.
What does the group think.

Any comments appreciated.

Your doctor seems to think you are diabetic. No one here will make a
medical diagnosis.

I would be interested in hearing what type of diet you are on. My first
guess would be a low-fat, low-cal diet, probably 1500 calories per day or
less with little or no breakfast.

No. Not even close. Its more like 1800 2500 per day.
Now I do try to stay away from the heavy sugar stuff.
And I watch my dinner meal especially and try to keep it
low carb. But that's about it. I don't expect anyone to make a
diagnosis. Just their opinion is what I'm after. As far as the doctor...
The salesman at the Cadillac dealer says I need a new car too. :-)

Thanks

So, you are putting your doctor in the same category as a car salesman?
Interesting.

If you are female, there is a hormone change to look at, especially around
50. Insulin is a hormone, and that is the primary hormone diabetics are
concerned with. The doc seems to be trying to regulate your insulin levels.

One thing to try might be to spread out your meals or try some snacks. Some
healthy snacks are cheese and nuts.

To be diabetic according to the WHO you must have FBG at 126. You er very
close to that, but you are on medication.. Maybe you tipp over 126 if you
stop taking meds for a couple of dayes?

If the top of the normal range is 6.5 you are normal with 6.2 but high to be
an non-diabetic.

What it pretty normal weight? An bmi of 27 can be enough! And normal
weighted can get diabetes to. Maybe your are "type 1.5"?

I'd got off the drugs and am doing better with diet and modest exercise.
Weight loss has helped. But if you go that way DO test a lot. Testing
helps you determine which food boost your BG. After a while I am able
to guess my BG pretty well.
"watching the diet" may be a poor way of putting it though. It's about
lifestyle.
This email would take 3 days to write if I went into detail, but I
think its doable and advisable. If you're determined to stay off the
drug crutch you can do it.
For Doctors its easy, prescribe this then later more. The Dr can't
follow you home and make you eat right and cut out the beers and bagels.
Dr Isadore Rosenthal recently said that Type II diabetes sometimes
completely disappear in individuals who lose the weight.
I think there's a caveat to that: you have to maintain that weight loss.
It aint easy but it's doable.
