Heart failure patients need extra calories
Oct 22 (Reuters Health) - Findings from a new study suggest that patients
with congestive heart failure (CHF) often do not consume enough calories and
protein. As a result, such patients have reduced energy available for
physical activities.
CHF is a common heart problem that can occur after a heart attack. With CHF,
the heart is unable to pump effectively and this leads to a slew of
problems, including excess fluid in the lungs and lower extremities. The
condition is often treated with drugs that remove the excess fluid or that
help the heart pump better.
In the current study, Dr. Ornella Pastoris, from the Universita degli Studi
di Pavia in Italy, and colleagues compared the nutritional intake and energy
expenditure of 57 CHF patients with that of 49 similar subjects without a
heart condition. All of the patients had stable CHF, were not obese, and
lived at home.
The researchers' findings are reported in the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology.
The authors found that intake of calories and proteins was similar in both
groups. However, in CHF patients, but not in controls, total energy
expenditure exceeded calorie intake. This means that such patients were
running on empty most of the time with little or no energy available for
various activities.
The results suggest that heart failure patients often do not eat enough to
meet their energy needs, the investigators state. Moreover, just because
they consumed "normal" amounts of calories and protein, that doesn't mean
these amounts are adequate for them, they emphasize.
