Symptoms

Usually, people who develop type 1 diabetes have a normal number of
pancreatic beta cells at birth. Over months and years, the number of beta
cells decreases as the body's immune system attacks and destroys these
cells.

Symptoms do not appear until about 80 percent of the beta cells are
destroyed. At that time, a person with type 1 diabetes may experience some
or all of the following symptoms:

a.. Excessive thirst or dry mouth
b.. Dehydration
c.. Frequent urination
d.. Blurred vision
e.. Weight loss
f.. Weakness or constantly feeling tired
g.. Vomiting or nausea
h.. Inability to pay attention
i.. Fruity odor on the breath

Symptoms To Look For In Children

In general, a child's symptoms will be the same as those listed above.
Weight loss tends to be more apparent in children than adults, however, even
though they may have a large appetite.

Children with diabetes may not complain of anything, but parents may notice
changes in their behavior that high blood sugar can cause. For example, a
child may start waking in the middle of the night to urinate or wetting the
bed after months or years of being dry. Lower grades in school might be a
sign that a child is having trouble concentrating, has blurry vision, or is
too tired to study.

in children the onset and worsening of symptoms is extremely rapid.
