Pancreas Cells Could be Stem Cells
TORONTO, Aug 23, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- University
of Toronto researchers have identified cells in an adult mouse pancreas
capable of generating insulin-producing beta cells.
Millions of diabetics must take insulin injections to compensate for
defective pancreatic islets, made up largely of beta cells, that should
release insulin to regulate blood sugar levels, researchers said.
"People have been intensely searching for pancreatic stem cells for a while
now, and so our discovery of precursor cells within the adult pancreas that
are capable of making new pancreatic cells is very exciting," researcher
Simon Smukler said in a statement.
Scientists said they hope to prove these precursor cells are stem cells,
meaning they can renew themselves over the entire life of an organism and
have some ability to generate varied cell types. Pancreatic stem cells could
provide beta cells for transplant treatments, researchers said.
Researchers also found the pancreatic cells they discovered generated both
beta cells and neurons
The research is published in the online edition of Nature Biotechnology
