new to ng

Re: new to ng -- Posted by no@no.com on 12-10-04 19:41

Welcome. My problems are nowhere near that serious, so I can't say much
about that. This is a wonderful group, unfortunately with some crazy junk
posts going now, so you have to sort a bit for the good posts. Usenet is
kind of like a conversation in a public park, many good people but some nuts
and drunks butting in, wanting attention. Just ignore anything that seems
wierd. Some very knowledgeable people may be back after the holidays.

It does sound like you need to talk to a dietician or someone like that.
Really, the way you are eating would be unhealthy for anyone! Even a
diabetic with a very mild case would probably have high BG's with that diet.

Good luck, please keep posting and telling us more.

Welcome to the group!

That's too bad. But at least these days we do have lasers. I think there
was probably not much that could be done about such things in the old days.

Unfortunately, that is a nasty side effect of Prednisone. It might be
possible for him to lower his BG further by using more insulin, but since
I've never used the stuff, I'll let someone else address that issue.

That's too bad. Is he on a special diet, such as low protein? I don't know
that much about kidney transplants. My friend had one, but unfortunately,
her body rejected it, so she had to go back on dialysis. I know she was on
a very strict diet, but she also had some other issues besides the kidney
failure.

Diabetes can be kind of like riding on a roller coaster at times. Except
that you don't get the other fun stuff like you would at an amusement park.
And then just when you think you have things figured out, something else
will change. Just try to take it one day at a time.

You need some good advice from a superior insulin specialist: an
endocrinologist, or at least a CDE who trains insulin users.

Prednisone "commands" our livers to frantically manufacture glucose and
release it into the blood. That makes the blood sugars go sky high. Most
folks can fight it with insulin but the doses can be frighteningly high.

We have had posters report daily doses of 300 units just to achieve "so-so"
control.

I think his situation requires some intensive, personal care from an
insulin specialist. Most non-diabetologist docs can't even come close to
handling a situation like his.

Such folks are in short supply. I would start calling Hospitals in search
of a "Diabetes Department" and ask for emergency help.

One hint: I have read that the larger doses are absorbed slowly. If I
were in his position, I would take multiple, simultaneous, smaller doses,
i.e. perhaps 4, 5 or whatever, simultaneous small doses rather than a
single large dose.

I didn't think nl.support.diabetes was an english speaking
newsgroup?¿? The other two are.

I'm 37 been type 1 since I was 8. 30 years in a few months. It
sounds like your soon to be, was in poor control like I was while
growing up with this. I was able to catch the kidney problems in time
to turn them around. All my kidney tests come back normal now. But I
have had major problems with my eyes, neuropathy and gastroparesis.

Gotta take my hat off to you. It takes a special person to give a
gift like that.

having to take his cocktail makes it very difficult to get control of
his BGs. in which case you have to learn not to stress over not
having perfect control. even those without complications or
transplants don't get perfect control.

an insulin pump may be of great help to him. he should look into it.
