Not eating and BG up high?

Not eating and BG up high? -- Posted by Chuck on 01-12-05 08:53

Is this normal? I am Diabetic, Type II. I take Glyberide, Metaformin,
and Actos. I am sitting here starving and my BG numbers are above 200.
Is that normal? I have been Diabetic for 10 years and have not seen
it, but recently changed my eating habits with a job change. I am not
eating Lunch at the same time as I was and so on. When from a morning
shift to an evening shift. Has anyone else had this problem? I try to
do exsersize more to bring it down, it just wont go down, despite me
being hungry.

There are more active diabetes groups: alt.support.diabetes and
alt.support.diabetes.uk. Try asking there.

Might search for 'diurnal variation' and BG, and about hunger and/or
exercise causing a 'liver dump'.

Liver dumping sugar. You should eat, at least a small amount.
It happens to all of us.

Talk to your doctor about this. I, too, suspect a liver dump of sugar
because you're not eating. The shift change at work may have moved your
possible "Dawn Phenomenon" to a different time, confusing you body. The
DP is common with diabetics. The liver dumps sugar into your blood
stream while also sweeping up insulin in your blood. The idea is to get
you moving in the morning for your active day. Since we diabetics have
an impaired Phase 1 insulin response (stored insulin rushing to scene of
blood glucose)along with insulin resistance, our bg numbers climb
despite out having no food.

My doctor corrected my DP by having me take Metformin (Glucophage) at
bedtime along with a bite or two of protein (cottage cheese). The
Metformin persuades the liver not to dump and so does the cottage cheese
slowly feeding me during the night, further persuading the liver that no
stored glucose is necessary. This may not work for everyone.
