Is there a specialist for diabetics?

Is there a specialist for diabetics? -- Posted by orangetrader on 02-08-05 18:47

In the past few physical I exhibited high sugar levels and my doctor told me
I have diabetic tendency. I asked him whether this meant pre-diabetes or
type 2 and he said this means I have "pre-type 2" but if I watch my diet and
exercise I may never have type 2. I did some research and it seems there
are two schools of thought - developing into type 2 is inevitable just a
matter of time or actually it is preventable.

My data is:

Sugar 95
Hemoglobin A1C 5.7
Cholestrol 181
Tri. 107
HDL 54
LDL 106
Ferratin 395

Any idea how bad this is? I have always had high Ferratin level, no idea
why, I don't take vitamins or supplements with iron. Tested negative for
hemochromatosis. Is this a type 2 or pre-diabetes? If I want to see a
specialist for a second opinion is there such a thing as a diabetic
specialist? I am 5'8" 138 lbs so weight is not a problem.

Thanks for any comments.

O

The specialist is called an Endocrinologist. You are at the low end of
normal. Normal is less then 100 but 100 to 125 is prediabetes. Anything 126
or higher is diabetes

The problem with an A1C result is different labs have different numbers
considered normal so to evaluate your results effectively, you need to know
what your lab considers normal. My personal experience is in many labs
anything in the 5's is normal and the 6's are diabetes. If yours uses the
same values then you are at the upper end of normal on that test too.

You are FINE. You don't have pre-diabetes at all from just that reading, but
listen to your doctor if he (by the other tests) states that you do.

For me, my doctor looked at trends. He saw that over time, my A1Cs were
gradually climbin. I had finally jumped from a 6.3 to a 7.3 and he
officially diagnosed me as a diabetic.

If you doctor is really concerned, ask him to do a FULL Glucose
Tolerance test. If you fail that (even though you may not be a
full-blown diabetic), you may want to learn about Type II diabetes and
see what you can do to control it with diet and exercise. This will help
to slow the gradual progression of the disease.

Just my two cents (read, personal experience!) :)

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!
