OT Get ready America OT Get ready America -- Posted by Tax Man on 03-03-05 15:14
Get ready Americans for the biggest screwing in all history. For some
time I have worried that the consumption tax (national sales tax) to
replace our income tax idea would take hold. This would be a nightmare
for low and middle income people. There is more and more talk every day
for this. Now that old geezer Greenspan is saying it is a good idea. He
adds that maybe we should also keep the income tax and have both. Since
the consumption tax would be a rich man's dream, that is probably what
we will end up with. With a consumption tax, the low and middle income
earners would pay all of the tax and the rich man would pay even less.
Americans had better start raising hell with their congressmen and
senators now to stop this before it gains anymore momentum. The only
fair income tax replacement would be a flat tax with the standard
deduction and the family member exemptions and no other deductions or
loopholes. Please help spread the word.

While I support the idea of a flat tax, the rich would never go for it. I
don't however understand how a consumption tax would put most of the burden
on the poor and middle class. Isn't it supposed to work so that the more you
spend the more you pay, much like sales tax? If so the rich guys that buy
300.00 shoes would be paying more taxes than I would for my 40.00 Wal-Mart
shoes. Maybe I misunderstood how it works and if so I'd appreciate it if
someone could explain it to me.

Yea, that goes for me too. As I understand a consumption/sales tax
plan, it's as Deb says, the more you spend, the more tax(es) you pay.
But of course, our dear, beloved government would never make it simple
for the average joe. One thing that will really be a sticking point:
the carved in stone, bathed in blood, don't touch my - "Mortgage
Interest Deduction". If it weren't so important, it could be fun to
watch this thing work out. And, as all things in Government,
eventually unravel.
Oh well back to the bushes. Remember, Lurking is not a sin, only an
obsession.
Ciao!!

Most low and middle income earners spend all the make and more. This
would mean they would pay tax on every dollar they earn. The rich man
could have millions or billions that he wouldn't spend and pay no tax at
all on this money.

But the rich man would still be contributing more actual tax dollars because
he would be spending more. Using your way of thinking we should do an income
test to figure out how much each person should pay for a Big Mac, because
the current cost of one is a smaller part of a rich persons income than it
is for a poor person. In life things are never 100% fair and efforts to set
up the tax code to compensate for disparate incomes only resulted in
loopholes exploited by those who can afford a tax attorney. A consumption
tax or a flat rate tax would be much closer to fair than what we have now.

Yes a flat tax would be more fair but a consumption tax would not.
