RE: What is leptin? When will it be available for people with type 2
diabetes?
Answer:
Leptin is a hormone made in fat cells that may regulate food intake and body
weight by telling the brain when the body contains enough fat. A study of
123 humans reported that daily injections of leptin, in combination with a
reduced-calorie diet, led to significant weight loss (average of 16 pounds
over 6 months for those on the highest doses). The most common side effects
were redness and itching or swelling at the injection site, common when
human proteins are injected. None of the participants in the study had
diabetes, but the data suggest that leptin had a beneficial effect on blood
glucose levels. It is not clear whether the effect was due to the leptin or
the weight loss, but both weight loss and improved blood glucose levels are
beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. The journey from research
laboratory to drugstore shelf is often a long one (3-5 years). The next
steps are more research studies and then approval from the FDA.
