Am I diabetic?

Am I diabetic? -- Posted by FERRANTE on 04-02-05 19:24

I am 47 years old and morbidly obese. I have never been diagnosed with
diabetes, but it runs in my dad's side of the family. And my mom
developed it, later in life and then after becoming sick and losing
weight, it went away, so she gave me her machine to check if I wanted
to.

Every once in a while I will check and it will range from 95-150 or
so, in the a.m. Because I don't have it, I might check every few weeks
just to see what is happening, and then this happened.

Recently I have been shoveling regular pop (over a 2 litre a day,
maybe 2 ) and eating 5-7 candy bars at once. Combine that with daily
food. Well, the other night I had the above, plus I got up around
3:a.m. and got a huge glass of Faygo (reg) and two candy bars and sat
on the edge of the bed and polished all of that off. The next a.m.,
out of curiosity, I checked my blood sugar and it was 227. It has
never been higher than 156! I got scared and started drinking water
and no pop or candy. The next day I check it and it is 130 (in the
a.m. with nothing for eat for about 12 hours or so).

Under those conditions, is 227 possible without being a diabetic? Are
their any web sites that gives explanations of different readings and
stuff like that?

I have decided to stop all of the sugar pop and candy and try and lose
weight. Seeing the 227 ready scared me. I don't want to see that
again.

Your thoughts, please...

Mark

Sounds like you are. To see your doctor and be checked.

Agreed. Ferrante, if you are morbidly orbese, why haven't you seen a doctor
about that and perhaps arranged a glucose tolerance test? As I understand
the research work, Type 2 diabetes in its early stages can cause hunger and
weight gain. It's later, as it progresses, that it causes weight loss and
thirst and a lot of the more obvious symptoms.

The first stages of treating Type 2 diabetes are things you may wish to do
anyway, namely a healthy diet, and exercise. I've met several new diabetics
this last year, including one at my workplace who thinks that eating Atkins
labeled candy bars and fasting is the way to treat his diabetes. He's lost
weight, which is helping him, but I'm concerned about his nutrition.

Two FBG(fasting blood glucose) readings 126+ is diabetes, 100>FBG<126 is
prediabetes. Craving sugar in large amounts like that is another sign.
Luckily, once you stabilize your BG, you may find it easier to lose weight.

Time to make an app't with your doctor ASAP before you do any more damage to
your body. Diabetes doesn't happen overnight, the progression begins years
before.

Mark - I have just recently been diagnosed with diabetes. Normal
blood sugar readings should be 60 to 120. I was told that for me to
be in control I should be 80 to 140. I am on a low carb diet and my
blood sugar levels have been averaging about 110. I think you should
see a doctor about your levels.
