Blood glucometer offer not all that great! Blood glucometer offer not all that great! -- Posted by Alan on 04-05-05 19:13
Over ten years ago I purchased a blood glucometer at a cost of about $160
(All dollars are Canadian $). Test strips currently cost from $85 to $88 per
hundred..
Recently, I got a flyer from the manufacturer of my glucometer offering me
one of their two top models which were both faster and used a lot less blood
than my old one for free if I phoned an 800 number or sent in a short
questionnaire.
I went to a Walmart pharmacy to see if this was a good deal. The new meters
sell for between $7 and $12 new (a fraction of the price of mine when I
bought it)and they had an in-store offer if you bought 100 test strips, you
got a meter free.
Sounds great - until you compare prices of the test strips! The strips for
my old machine were $85 per hundred and the price for 100 strips for the NEW
machines they offered to give me was $97!! That's $12 per hundred MORE..
Do the math - you test daily, that's about $43 per year more. 4 times a day
and that's $170 per year! (enough to buy almost 200 of the old strips).
If your medical plan pays 100%, then it's not really a concern but if it
doesn't cover them or only reimburses partially, that's a good bite and I
wouldn't be surprised if the insurance companies take notice of these things
and reflect it in coverage costs.
When I got home, I threw the "free" offer in the garbage can.
It's like the makers of inkjet printers - give the device away dirt cheap
and make the consumer pay obscene prices for the ink or it's useless. I can
do without an inkjet printer though .

If you don't have insurance, then get the sticks via ebay. Stick
prices on ebay have been steadily rising for the past month or so.
But, still a whole lot cheaper than retail or mailorder. Accu chek
comfort curve sticks are the most plentiful, and the cheapest. All
Lifescan sticks, Freestyle, and Ascensia sticks are expensive on ebay.
