Anyone know of a cheap Homemade Blood Glucose Testing method - Even Cheap strips too Expensive ! Anyone know of a cheap Homemade Blood Glucose Testing method - Even Cheap strips too Expensive ! -- Posted by Dave on 04-16-05 04:43
The cheapest at Wal-Mart is $ 42.48 for 100. I test 12 times a day.
Yeah, I'm really thrilled if your diabetes is so well controlled that you
need to test only
a couple of times a day.
Please, lets not get into the typical sidetracking about
"why do you need to test 12 times a day ?"
Is there a cheap homemade way ?
At 12 tests per day, that's 4380 tests per year which
(at $42.48 per 100 strips) costs over $ 1860.00. In 10 years that's
$18,600.00
which is enough to buy a decent new car. (like say a Toyota Camry which will
last 10 years - generally good for 200,000 miles).
Does anone know of a cheap homemade blood glucose testing method ? Some
briliant teckie out there must have devised something. I'm guessing that
measuring the ohms resistance of blood might be a means of correllation with
BG levels. The trick will probably be insuring the exact distance between
contacts and the exact surface area of contact with the blood every time.
Anybody crack this one ?

Do those strips that you look to see what color they turn cost very much?
How precise are they? I've heard of people cutting those lengthwise to get
more uses out of each strip.

It sounds like you are talking about urine glucose test strips. They not
only are not that accurate but they only measure when your glucose gets
above 180. Not a safe alternative. Not to mention totally useless in
diagnosing hypoglycemia episodes.
