Didn't want to put just vitamins in the post and you all think it was spam.
There is so much of that here, I just decided to ask the question in a new
thread.

What vitamins and/or herbs or whatever is good for diabetics to take. Maybe
stuff that will strengthen pancreas.

I know about Cinnamon. What else? Any good legit formulas?

Thanks in advance.

I use:

Oil of Evening Primrose
Billberry Extract
Feverfew
Horse Chestnut
Hawthorn Berry Extract
Butchers Broom

These are all recommended for neuopathy and for vein and artery health.
They worked to eliminate my quite severe leg pain. Your milage may
vary. Shop around the prices are all over the place. You can look up
the uses for these suppliments on the internet.
I get most of mine at Wall Mart or mail order. Good luck.

Take a good multi-vitamin each morning. That's what my doctor
recommended for me.

I'd certainly avoid any specially prepared "diabetic" vitamin
formulations such as Alphabetic. They're usually over priced and
contain everything that's rumored to help diabetes, even if they're not
proven safe. And they often include good things in doses which are too
small to actually do any good. waste of money.

Buy a general purpose multivitamin.

Avoid niacin. Small quantities are probably okay, but niacin tends to
raise BGs.

B Vitamins are good. Glucophage (metformin) tends to interfere with
Vitamin B absorption (vitamin B3, I think) so a supplement is encouraged
for diabetics on that medication. Folic acid and B12 reduce
homocysteine levels which are associated with heart attacks. THis
association is still controversial, but B vitamins are very cheap and
harmless, so there's nothing to lose and plenty to gain if homocysteine
ultimately turns out to be a villain.

Chromium, vanadium, zinc, selenium, manganese and magnesium supplements
are controversial. There's research that suggests they might be
helpful, but it's all very doubty so far. They may just treat a
deficiency rather than actually lower bgs. And because they're metals,
they quickly become toxic when you take too much. Some people report
improvements when taking these, so you might experiment. Try taking
them one at a time, and look for any results on your meter.

Don't take Vitamin E. They used to recommend it, but lately they tell
us it increases our risk of death by heart attack "only a little bit."

Beta Carotene. Don't take. They used to recommend it, but now they
say it's worthless for diabetics.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) Powerful antioxidant. Recommended to reverse
neuropathy, but it's a slow process that can take months. Can be taken
to prevent damage. Expensive. Best purchased through web sites. You
may need to take high doses.

Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) Taken with alpha lipoic acid to increase
its potency.

Cinnamon. 1/3 teaspoon per day. Supposed to be good.

Apple cider vinegar. Supposed to help lower bgs when taken with
meals. I bought a bottle. Smells awful. Probably foul tasting. Just
haven't been able to face trying it yet. I expect it to pretty much
ruin the enjoyment of a good meal.

An aspirin. Good for preventing heart attacks. Take at bedtime, I think.

Gymnema sylvestre is commonly mentioned. It's from India, and seems to
have some BG lowering effect. However, it hasn't been studied, so any
side effects are unknown. Does it liquefy your liver or kill you
kidneys? Unknown.

Bitter Melon. From Asia, I think. Like Gymnema sylvestre, but
different.

Nopal (prickly pear cactus) Found in Mexican food markets. Seems to
have a BG lowering effect taken with meals. A folk remedy for diabetes
for years.

And there are probably others.

Prevention magazine recommended beginning meals with salad w/oil & vinegar
dressing.
