It should have a maximum, and recipients should be reminded of it often
so they do something about it while they have time. Here (Missouri),
you can get general assistance for (I think) three years and a variety
of other options if you have children. Food stamps (EBT cards) are
forever as far as I can tell. What a lot of people do is go for SSI
disability, and a lot of them get it. It's gotten so bad that the
caseworkers simply assume you are filing a fraudulent claim - it's
really tough on people that have a legitimate need but aren't outwardly
crippled.

I've seen too many people fritter away their opportunities, and assume
they will always be able to get by on someone elses dime. If more
people took their assistance as just that, not as an entitlement, we'd
have a very different situation in our cities and schools. Like I've
said, a lot of immigrants come here with nothing and make something of
themselves with simple frugality and hard work. They wonder why
Americans complain so much. It's all in your perspective, I guess.

And what state is that?
Do you only know this because they kicked you off of it?
There is no lifetime max for federally funded parts of Welfare. States
add things to it, but there are parts that don't go away for people who
show they need it.
