WASHINGTON -- The government is warning consumers not to take a Chinese
dietary supplement that contains a diabetes drug that could cause
life-threatening reactions in some people.
The Liqiang 4 capsules contain the drug glyburide, an effective diabetes
medicine when properly prescribed, the Food and Drug Administration said
Friday. But people who unknowingly consume it in this product could suffer
life-threatening consequences if they already have low blood sugar or are
taking diabetes medication, the FDA said.
Dietary supplements are not supposed to contain prescription drugs. The FDA
is investigating the product, which is made in China and sold here in herbal
product stores and by mail order through Bugle International of Northridge,
Calif
Consumers should stop using the supplement and dispose of it immediately _
and seek medical care if they experience fatigue, excessive hunger, profuse
sweating or numbness of the extremities, the FDA warned.
FDA tested the capsules after receiving a consumer complaint of such
symptoms.
The product was sold as part of a two-bottle set, one containing 90 capsules
labeled Liqiang 4 Dietary Supplement Capsules and the other labeled Liqiang
1. The FDA is evaluating what is in that second bottle.
