AVOID STRESS
If the holiday season is making you feel stressed, you might find yourself with a few extra pounds. What’s the connection? Feeling overwhelmed can cause stress hormones to surge through your body and these chemicals do more than make you feel shaky and nervous…they might also increase your appetite and make it easier for fat to settle on your midsection.
One study found that comfort foods high in fat and carbohydrates actually helped reduce stress hormones, which might explain your craving for potato chips after a hard day. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that when stressed-out rats ate comfort foods, levels of stress hormones decreased. But, there is a catch. Stress seems to cause fat to store in the stomach-area, raising risk for heart disease.

Shop smart – avoid the crowds by shopping at slower times, such as late evening, or buy gifts online. To avoid the stores completely, use your special talents to create hand-crafted gifts, or give the gift of your time – offer to watch children, or teach a friend to play golf.
Take time for you – in the holiday rush, it can be hard to find a spare moment, but re-charging your batteries and relaxing for a few minutes every day will help you fight stress and stay healthy. Give into your desire to watch a favorite show, take a bubble bath, or play a sport or game.
Back to basics – it can be easy to forget to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. But eating right, along with exercising, drinking plenty of water and sleeping soundly will help you to fuel your body and fight stress.
Simplify – look for ways to streamline your efforts. Instead of going out shopping whenever you happen to think of something you need, carry one list with you and stick to it.
Avoid comparing – many people become stressed thinking of how this year's holiday will compare with celebrations in year’s past. Avoid this trap by realizing that every year is a new, unique experience worth enjoying.
